"You going?" Stella asked the assembled women excitedly.
"To what?" Rebecca asked.
"The Policeman's Ball," Maka said before taking a bite of her sandwich.
"I'm going," Rebecca said.
"I'm going, too," Maka said, raising her free hand slightly.
"And which designer are you going to wear?" Rachel asked with a smirk.
"Don't know. Probably Vera Wang. Garrett seems to like the way her dresses look on me."
Rebecca's jaw dropped. "How can you afford Vera Wang?"
"When her boyfriend's worth a couple hundred million, he can afford whatever she wants," Stella said.
"Wow," Rebecca said. "Just...wow."
Rachel laughed and turned to Rebecca. "She doesn't let him spoil her often. It just rubs her the wrong way. Makes her cranky."
Maka glared at her friend. "Well, he also said I could spoil a few of you, too. Nothing too expensive, you know, but he knows a few of you really can't afford to splurge on a dress."
Rachel gaped slightly. "Please tell me I'm on the list?"
"You are," she said with a nod. "As long as you lay off the cracks about my personal life."
"Yes!" Rachel said triumphantly. "Now I can go."
"You weren't going to go?" Stella asked.
Rachel nodded. "Didn't have the money to splurge on a dress, as Kaile put it."
"What about the tickets?" Rebecca asked.
Rachel sobered up. "Oh. Guess I can't go."
"You know, I can ask Garrett to cover them. I know you always wanted to go to this," Maka said.
"I could kiss you. And your boyfriend," she said with a grin. "I have to go tell Marty that I'm making him dance with me."
Rachel laughed. "You've got about five minutes left on your lunch. I'd say go now so you can rub it in Sid's face."
"Oh, good idea." She hopped up from the couch and headed to the elevator.
"So who else do you know that's going?" Rebecca asked Stella.
"Flack and Susan, Ryan and Lindsay, me and Sheldon, and I think Mac's going by himself."
"Wait a sec. What about Danny and Christina?" Maka asked.
"Danny's going to be on the night shift that night," Stella said. "Christina doesn't want to go alone."
"Well, I'm going alone," Rebecca said. "I can keep her company."
"She's never gotten to go before, either," Maka said. "That doesn't seem fair that the first time most of us get to go, and at the same time, they aren't going to go."
"Who isn't going to go to what?" Christina asked from the break room doorway.
"You and Danny not getting to go to the Policeman's Ball with the rest of us," Stella said.
Christina was quiet for a moment. "Danny wants me to go without him," she finally said. "I just don't want to go by myself."
"You should go," Rebecca said. "Next year we can all make it a point to let the two of you go together."
Maka nodded. "And if you want to go this year, you can be on my special list."
"What list?" Christina asked, slightly confused.
"The list of women Garrett will spoil by getting them dresses," Stella said. "Which I am hopefully on because I keep helping you pick pretty dresses to wear to other more formal events."
Maka laughed. "Garrett already said you were on the list. He loved that cream dress you picked out for the Broadway premiere...said he owes you one."
"Good. Anyone else on it?"
"Lindsay, since she's strapped for money." She turned to Rebecca. "You want on my list?"
"Sure, why not?" Rebecca said with a nod. "It's not every day I get offered the chance to get a nice dress."
"Are you going to go, Chris?" Maka asked gently. No one tried to cajole her into going; they all simply waited for an answer.
Christina sighed. "I'll go, I'll go. But I have that dress Carl designed for me to test out his formal wear line that I haven't gotten to wear. I'll wear that. And I think Susan's doing the same thing, so I won't feel out of place wearing a Carl Levin original."
"At least let Garrett get you accessories," Maka said.
Finally Christina smiled. "Fine. I will accept some jewelry and shoes. Just...tasteful stuff."
"You're as bad as Maka is," Stella said. "Come on, we're getting spoiled."
"Stella, I have the money to spoil myself," Christina said.
"Yes, but this is someone else spoiling you. It's different."
Maka shook her head. "Let me at least warn him how much you want to be spoiled, okay, Stella?"
"Fine. Give him warning."
Maka fished her phone out of her pocket and moved away from the women, pressing the button for Garrett's number.
"Hey," Garrett said when he picked up. "Finalize your list yet?"
"Let me guess,...everyone?"
"Not quite. Rebecca, Lindsay, Rachel and Stella. But you already promised Stella a new dress. She's taking you up on that now." She thought for a second. "Christina's wearing a dress that Carl designed for her, but she says she'll take jewelry and shoes."
He paused for a second. "Why am I getting three other dresses?"
"Lindsay and Rachel can't afford them, and I felt bad about Rebecca being left out."
"Good reasons," he said. "Anything else I'm paying for?"
"Two more pairs of tickets, for Lindsay, Ryan, Rachel and Marty."
"Tell everyone not to worry about the tickets...I paid for one of the big tables. I'll put their names on the list and they'll be covered."
"See, that's the kind of spoiling I love. My friends are going to flip." She paused for a second. "Have any of you got your tickets?"
"I did," Rebecca said.
"Sheldon's getting ours today," Stella said. "Why?"
"Don't worry about them...Garrett got a table."
"I'll find someone to give mine to," Rebecca said.
Maka nodded before turning back to her call. "You lucked out...Rebecca's the only one who got a ticket. Well, Mac might have too, but...I'll ask him later."
"Carl said something about Angell wanting to go, even if she had to be on call, so she might be at the table, too."
"Why won't he be coming?"
"He's prepping for Fashion Week to debut his formal wear line. He's swamped."
"Have your friends tell me when their days off are, and get their measurements and preferences. I'll see about using the same personal shopper I used for your mom's birthday present."
"She was good. Ma never looked prettier."
"Then that's who I'll request."
"Between you and Carl you're going to be personally responsible for making the best dressed women look so good. You know that, right?"
"It'll be worth it. Your friends deserve a chance to get dressed up every once in a while. And you do too, even if I have to fight you every inch of the way over it."
She laughed. "Well, you're footing the bill for this event. Anyway, I have to go. See you when I get home."
"Love you too." She hung up and looked at the women. "We need to figure out which days everyone has off so that you guys can get over to my place and shop."
"How are we going to shop at your place?" Stella asked.
"Personal shopper," Maka said. "I never use one because I've got you, Stella, but we've used one for my Ma and it seems to work pretty well. I just need measurements."
"Shouldn't be too hard," Christina said. "There's a tape measure in my desk. I can pull everyone aside and take their measurements. What are we talking here?"
"Bust, waist and hips should be fine," Maka said. "And size number, too."
"I'm actually kind of excited now," Christina said. "Even if I am going by myself."
"Why don't you add Danny's name to the table list?" Rebecca said to Maka. "Like a just in case thing."
"The chances of Danny getting time to go is slim to none," Christina said.
"I'm going to do it anyway because I can," Maka said with a nod.
"Hey, break time's over," Flack said, leaning his head past Christina into the doorway. "Rebecca, Stell...Mac needs you in his office."
"On our way," Stella said as Rebecca stood up."
"See you guys later," Maka said, standing up herself.
"Bye," Christina added, heading over to the coffee machine.
Maka looked at her for a minute. "You really want to go with him," she said quietly.
"Yeah. But...this could be fun, too."
"We'll make sure it's fun, Jensen," Maka said with a grin. "Promise."
